We might get an aurora (northern lights) tonight (August 5, 2011)

August 5, 2011

Also southern lights too.  There was a big coronal mass ejection (CME) yesterday.  Arrival time of the stuff at earth is thought to be 10 hours UT (6 a.m. EDT) plus or minus 7 hours. Though no reports yet. See Phil Plait’s Bad Astronomy for more on it. Also check out www.spaceweather.com.

My friend and I were camping at Point De Tour on the Red Cliff Indian Reservation at the Apostle Islands in northern Wisconsin. We witnessed a display of the Northern Lights for over an hour (perhaps even as long as an hour and a half). There wasn’t any color, but only white. Still, it was the most impressive display of anything either of us has ever seen in the sky. The Lights continued to change shapes–from what looked like bursts of sun rays, to geometric patterns, to a confluence of light that looked like a spiral galaxy. All the while sheets of electric (?) light passed over our heads like waves crashing on a beach. It was absolutely spectacular–even without the color.
