Ephemeris: 05/30/2025 – Ending orbit 50, looking ahead to the 1st month of orbit 51

May 30, 2025 Comments off

This is Bob Moler with Ephemeris for Friday, May 30th, the last program of Ephemeris’ 50th orbit of the Sun. Today the Sun will be up for 15 hours and 18 minutes, setting at 9:19, and it will rise tomorrow at 6:00. The Moon, 3 days before first quarter, will set at 1:17 tomorrow morning.

Let’s take a look at June skies. There will be a lot of sunshine this month. The daylight hours will increase a bit from 15 hours and 21 minutes today to 15 hours and 34 minutes on the 21st, retreating back to 15 hours 31 minutes at month’s end. At this time of the year the sunset times for Ludington, Interlochen, Petoskey and Mackinaw City are very nearly the same. However, the sunrise times are at their most divergent. With Ludington’s sunrise being 14 minutes later than Mackinaw City’s. The altitude of the Sun above the southern horizon at local noon (1:44 pm in Interlochen) on the solstice, June 20th will be 68 and three-quarters degrees. Summer will start at 10:42 PM that night.

The astronomical event times given in this blog are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (Lat 44.7° N, Long 85.7° W; EDT, UT – 4 hours) unless stated otherwise. Times will be different for other locations.

May 1, 2025 Comments off

This is Ephemeris for Thursday, May 1st. Today the Sun will be up for 14 hours and 15 minutes, setting at 8:48, and it will rise tomorrow at 6:30. The Moon, 3 days before first quarter, will set at 2:05 tomorrow morning.

May is here, when the promise made on Groundhog Day is finally fulfilled. Daylight hours in the Interlochen/Traverse City area will increase from 14 hours and 15 minutes today to 15 hours 20 minutes on the 31st. The altitude, or angle, of the Sun above the southern horizon at local noon will ascend from 61 degrees now to 67 degrees at month’s end. The altitude of the Sun in the Straits area will be a degree lower than that, but your daylight hours will be a few minutes longer. Ephemeris: 02/28/25 – Previewing March Skies

Ephemeris: 02/28/25 – Previewing March Skies

This is Ephemeris for Friday, February 28th. Today the Sun will be up for 11 hours and 8 minutes, setting at 6:29, and it will rise tomorrow at 7:19. The Moon, 1 day past new, will set at 7:34 this evening.

Let’s preview the month of March. In March the increase in daylight hours is at its greatest, with spring 3 weeks away. Daylight hours will increase from 11 hours and 11 minutes tomorrow to 12 hours and 44 minutes on the 31st. Along with that the altitude of the Sun at local noon will increase from 38 degrees tomorrow to 49 ½ degrees at month’s end. Local noon tomorrow, by the way, for Interlochen and Traverse City is 12:54 pm, which is mainly due to the fact that our standard time meridian happens to run through Philadelphia. That’s before daylight time starts on the 9th. On that date local noon will be 1:52 pm. Spring will begin later this month on the 20th when the Sun will pass overhead on the equator heading northward.

We change to Daylight Saving Time on the 9th. EST to EDT. Bah, Humbug!

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EST, UT – 5 hours). Times will be different for other locations.

The planets and stars are plotted for the 15th at 10 p.m. EDT in the evening and 6 a.m. on the 16th for the morning chart. These are the chart times. Note that Traverse City is located approximately 45 minutes behind our time meridian. (An hour and 45 minutes behind our Daylight Saving Time meridian during EDT). To duplicate the star positions on a planisphere (rotating star finder) you may have to set it to 45 minutes or 1 hour 45 minutes earlier than your current time.

Note the chart times of 10 PM on the 15th, and 6 AM on the 16th. For each week before then, add ½ hour (28 minutes if you’re picky). For each week after then, subtract ½ hour. For planet positions on dates other than the dateshere, check the Wednesday planet posts on this blog.

Ephemeris: 01/31/2025 – Previewing February Skies

January 31, 2025 Comments off

This is Bob Moler with Ephemeris for Friday, January 31st. Today the Sun will be up for 9 hours and 47 minutes, setting at 5:50, and it will rise tomorrow at 8:01. The Moon, 2 days past new, will set at 8:39 this evening.

January was a wild and crazy month, let’s hope February is short and sweet. Well, at least it’ll be short. The daylight hours throughout the month will be getting longer. Daylight hours will increase from 9 hours and 50 minutes tomorrow to 11 hours and 8 minutes on the 28th. The sunrise time will decrease from 8:01 today to 7:21 at month’s end. The sunset times will increase from 5:51 tomorrow to 6:29 on the 28th. Along with that the altitude of the Sun at noon will increase from 28.4 degrees tomorrow to 37.6 degrees at month’s end. It will be a degree lower for folks in the Straits area because they are a degree of latitude farther north. Local noon, by the way for Interlochen and Traverse City is about 12:56 p.m. The Moon will be near Saturn tonight.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EST, UT – 5 hours). Times will be different for other locations.

The planets and stars are plotted for the 14th at 9 PM EST in the evening and 6 AM for the morning chart. These are the chart times. Note that Traverse City is located approximately 45 minutes behind our time meridian. (An hour 45 minutes behind our daylight saving time meridian during EDT). To duplicate the star positions on a planisphere (rotating star finder) you may have to set it to 45 minutes or one hour 45 minutes (Daylight Time) earlier than the current time.

Note the chart times of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. are for the 14th and 15th. For each week before these dates, add ½ hour (28 minutes if you’re picky). For each week after, subtract ½ hour. Planet positions on dates other than the 15th can be found in the Wednesday planet posts on this blog.

Ephemeris: 12/31/2024 – Previewing January’s skies

December 31, 2024 Comments off

This is Ephemeris for New Year’s Eve, Tuesday, December 31st. The Sun will rise at 8:20. It’ll be up for 8 hours and 52 minutes, setting at 5:12. The Moon, 1 day past new, will set at 5:46 this evening.

Let’s look ahead at the month of January 2025. Thursday we will have our latest sunrise at 8:20. That time will drop to 8:02 by the 31st. Sunset times are already increasing. On the 1st at 5:13, will extend to 5:50 at month’s end, which will push the daylight hours to 9 hours 47 minutes by then. The altitude of the Sun at local noon will increase from under 23 degrees tomorrow to 28 degrees at month’s end. Tomorrow we will reach our closest distance from the Sun of the year at 91.4 million miles. Friday morning will see the peak of the Quadrantid meteor shower. They will be best seen in the early morning and seem to come from near the handle of the Big Dipper, where possibly more than 60 meteors an hour might be seen.

Ephemeris: 11/29/2024 – Previewing December skies

November 29, 2024 Comments off

This is Ephemeris for Native American Heritage Day, Friday, November 29th. Today the Sun will be up for 9 hours and 5 minutes, setting at 5:04, and it will rise tomorrow at 7:59. The Moon, 2 days before new, will rise at 7:39 tomorrow morning.

Let’s look at December skies. We are now in the holiday season and about to celebrate the southernmost travel of the Sun in the sky and its return northward. So there is not much change in sunrise and sunset times. The Sun will stop its travel south, the winter solstice, on the 21st at 4:20 am. It will make that day the shortest day in terms of daylight hours. However, the earliest sunset will occur on the 9th. The Geminid meteor shower will be hampered by the bright Moon when it reaches its peak on the evening of the 13th, near the full moon. This month continues the surprisingly active sunspot cycle that started four years ago and is nearing its peak.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EST, UT – 5 hours). Times will be different for other locations.

Ephemeris: 10/31/2024 – Previewing November skies

October 31, 2024 Comments off

This is Ephemeris for Halloween, Thursday, October 31st. The Sun will rise at 8:20. It’ll be up for 10 hours and 11 minutes, setting at 6:32. The Moon, 1 day before new, will rise at 8:34 tomorrow morning.

The month of November is one of early sunsets, especially with the return to standard time this Sunday, and shortening of daylight hours. Daylight hours will decrease from 10 hours 9 minutes tomorrow the 1st to 9 hours 4 minutes at month’s end. The altitude of the Sun above the southern horizon at local noon, which will drop from 31 degrees to 23½ degrees over the month. Apparent local noon this month will be around 12:30 PM. The sunset time on the 30th will be only 2 minutes later than the earliest sunset of the year. The sunrise time on the 30th will still have 22 minutes and a month to go until the latest sunrise. The Leonid meteor shower will have a peak on the morning of 17th with the Moon a day and a half past full spoiling the show. We are about 9 years away from the next Leonid meteor storm.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT – 4 hours). Times will be different for other locations.

Ephemeris: 10/01/2024 – Previewing the skies of October

October 1, 2024 Comments off

This is Ephemeris for Tuesday, October 1st. Today the Sun will be up for 11 hours and 40 minutes, setting at 7:22, and it will rise tomorrow at 7:42. The Moon, 1 day before new, will rise at 7:30 tomorrow morning.

Let’s look at the skies for the month of October. The Sun will still be moving south rapidly. Daylight hours in the Interlochen/Traverse City area and will drop from 11 hours and 40 minutes today to 10 hours, 11 minutes at month’s end. The altitude of the Sun above the southern horizon at local noon will be 42 degrees today, and will descend to 31 degrees on Halloween, also in the Interlochen area. Sunrise times will increase from 7:41 today all the way to 8:20 a.m. in Interlochen and Traverse City on the 31st. Sunset times will decrease from 7:22 p.m. today to 6:32 on Halloween.

The big event of October will be the appearance of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS in the evening sky which may become quite bright, but being a comet, all bets are off until you actually see it. It will become visible in the evening sky starting October 12th.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT – 4 hours). Times will be different for other locations.

Addendum

October path of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS

The track of Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS from October 12th through November 1st. The position of the stars are set for October 12th at 8 PM. The dates are the day of the month except the first and last entries which is year, month as a Roman numeral, and day. The number in parentheses is the magnitude of the comet. I wouldn’t believe it, but you can see how the comet gets dimmer as it goes through the month (remembering that the higher the magnitude number the dimmer the comet). Created using Stellarium.

This is Ephemeris for Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd. Today the Sun will be up for 13 hours and 9 minutes, setting at 8:16, and it will rise tomorrow at 7:08. The Moon is new today, and won’t be visible.

Let’s look at the skies for September. Daylight hours in the Interlochen/Traverse City area and will drop from 13 hours and 9 minutes today to 11 hours 43 minutes on the 30th. The altitude of the sun above the southern horizon at local noon will be 53 degrees today, and will descend to 42 degrees on the 30th. The official season of summer is getting short too, so enjoy it while you can. Summer will end and autumn will begin at 8:44 a.m. on the 22nd as the Sun will pass overhead at the equator heading southward. It will also mark sunset at the North Pole and sunrise at the South Pole. Southern Hemisphere dwellers will see the start of spring. The summer Milky Way is still visible to explore with binoculars or telescope.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT–4 hours). Times will be different for other locations.
