Ephemeris: 08/01/2024 – Previewing August skies
This is Ephemeris for Thursday, August 1st. Today the Sun will be up for 14 hours and 38 minutes, setting at 9:07, and it will rise tomorrow at 6:30. The Moon, 3 days before new, will rise at 4:03 tomorrow morning.
Let’s look ahead at the month of August in the skies. Daylight hours will decrease from 14 hours and 38 minutes today to 13 hours 15 minutes on the 31st. The altitude of the Sun at local noon, that is degrees of angle above the horizon will decrease from 63 degrees today to just over 53 degrees on the 31st. Straits area listeners can subtract one more degree from those angles. Local noon, when the Sun is due south, is about 1:43 p.m. The big event of the month will be in the morning sky: The Perseid meteor shower will be best seen on the morning of the 12th after the Moon sets, though members of the shower can be seen now. August is the first of my two favorite months for viewing the wonders of the summer Milky Way.
The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT–4 hours). They may be different for your location.

August Evening Star Chart

The planets and stars are plotted for the 15th at 10 pm EDT in the evening and 5 am. These are the chart times. Note that Traverse City is located approximately 45 minutes behind our time meridian, West 75° longitude. (An hour 45 minutes behind our daylight saving time meridian during EDT). To duplicate the star positions on a planisphere you may have to set it to 1 hour 45 minutes earlier than the current time.
Note the chart times are for the 15th. For each week before the 15th, add ½ hour (28 minutes if you’re picky). For each week after the 15th, subtract ½ hour. The planet positions are updated each Wednesday on this blog. See them for planet positions on dates other than the 15th.

Ephemeris: 07/01/2024 – Previewing July’s skies
This is Bob Moler with Ephemeris for Monday, July 1st. Today the Sun will be up for 15 hours and 30 minutes, setting at 9:31, and it will rise tomorrow at 6:02. The Moon, 3 days past last quarter, will rise at 2:50 tomorrow morning.
Let’s preview July’s skies. The Sun, having reached its northern solstice, is beginning to slide southward again, at first imperceptibly, then with greater speed. The daylight hours will decrease from 15 hours and 30 minutes today to 14 hours 40 minutes at month’s end. The daylight hours will be slightly shorter south of Interlochen, and slightly longer to the north. The altitude of the Sun at local noon, when it is due south will decrease from 68 degrees tomorrow to 63 degrees at month’s end. Despite the warmth, the Earth will reach its greatest distance from the Sun on Friday the 5th. Finally, a planet in the evening sky. Saturn will rise before midnight by mid-month, and Venus may be visible shortly after sunset by month’s end.
The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT–4 hours). They may be different for your location.

Ephemeris: 05/31/2024 – Previewing June’s skies
This is Ephemeris for Friday, May 31st. Today the Sun will be up for 15 hours and 20 minutes, setting at 9:21, and it will rise tomorrow at 6:00. The Moon, 1 day past last quarter, will rise at 3:12 tomorrow morning.
This is the last program of Ephemeris’ 49th orbit of the Sun, so let’s preview June skies, starting the 50th circuit. There will be a lot of sunlight in June. The daylight hours will increase a bit from 15 hours and 21 minutes tomorrow to 15 hours and 34 minutes on the 20th, the summer solstice, retreating back to 15 hours and 31 minutes at month’s end. At this time of the year the sunset times for Ludington, Interlochen, Petoskey and Mackinaw City are very nearly the same. However, the sunrise times are at their most divergent. With Ludington’s sunrise being 14 minutes later than Mackinaw City’s. The altitude of the Sun above the southern horizon at local noon will hover around 68 degrees. Local noon, when the Sun is actually due south in the Interlochen area will occur at about 1:43 p.m.
The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT–4 hours). They may be different for your location.

June Evening Star Chart

The planets and stars are plotted for the 15th at 11 p.m. EDT in the evening and 4 a.m. for the morning chart. These are the chart times. Note that Interlochen/Traverse City is located approximately 45 minutes behind our time meridian, West 75° longitude. (An hour 45 minutes behind our daylight saving time meridian during EDT). To duplicate the star positions on a planisphere you may have to set it to 1 hour 45 minutes earlier than the current time.
Note, the chart times of 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. are for the 15th. For each week before the 15th, add ½ hour (28 minutes if you’re picky). For each week after the 15th, subtract ½ hour, or 28 minutes. The planet positions are updated each Wednesday on this blog. For planet positions on dates other than the 15th, check the Wednesday planet posts on this blog for weekly positions.

Ephemeris: 04/30/2024 – Previewing May Skies
This is Ephemeris for Tuesday, April 30th. Today the Sun will be up for 14 hours and 13 minutes, setting at 8:47, and it will rise tomorrow at 6:31. The Moon, 1 day before last quarter, will rise at 3:34 tomorrow morning.
The merry month of May starts tomorrow. Daylight hours in the Interlochen/Traverse City area will increase from 14 hours and 16 minutes tomorrow to 15 hours 20 minutes on the 31st. The altitude, or angle, of the Sun above the southern horizon at local noon will ascend from 60 degrees tomorrow to 67 degrees at month’s end. The altitude of the Sun in the Straits area will be a degree lower than that, but the daylight hours will be a few minutes longer. The evening sky in May is devoid of the Milky Way which nearly rings the horizon, so during this time we are looking out the thin side of the Milky Way towards intergalactic space. There is the Virgo cluster of galaxies, some of which are visible in decent size amateur telescopes.
The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT–4 hours). They may be different for your location.

* Nautical Twilight
** Moonrise or moonset, whichever occurs between sunset and sunrise
Ephemeris: 04/01/2024 – Previewing April Skies
This is Ephemeris for April Fools’ Day, Monday, April 1st. Today the Sun will be up for 12 hours and 48 minutes, setting at 8:11, and it will rise tomorrow at 7:20. The Moon, at last quarter today, will rise at 4:15 tomorrow morning.
Wow! We’re already in the second quarter of 2024. Daylight hours in the Interlochen/Traverse City area and will increase from 12 hours and 48 minutes today to 14 hours 13 minutes on the 30th. The altitude, or angle, of the Sun above the southern horizon at local noon will be 50 degrees today and will ascend to 60 degrees on the 30th. The altitude of the Sun in the Straits area will be a degree lower. The actual time of local apparent noon this month for the Interlochen/Traverse City area, when the Sun passes due south, will be about 1:43 p.m. The big event of this month and this year will be the total solar eclipse one week from today. I will be talking about it, and how to observe the eclipse safely most of this week.
The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT–4 hours). They may be different for your location.

Ephemeris: 02/29/2024 – Previewing March Skies
This is Bob Moler with Ephemeris for Thursday, February 29th, the Leap Day or intercalary day. Today the Sun will be up for 11 hours and 8 minutes, setting at 6:30, and it will rise tomorrow at 7:19. The Moon, 3 days before last quarter, will rise at 11:59 this evening.
Let’s look at the skies for the month of March. The Sun will pass the celestial equator as the promising season of spring will begin. Daylight hours in the Interlochen/Traverse City area and will increase from 11 hours and 11 minutes Tomorrow to 12 hours 45 minutes on the 31st. The altitude, or angle, of the Sun above the southern horizon at local noon will be 38 degrees tomorrow and will ascend to nearly 50 degrees on the 31st. Spring will start on the 19th at 11:07 p.m. Part of the fault for that early date is the switch to daylight saving time this early in the year a while back. The Gregorian calendar reform of 1582 will keep the vernal equinox from falling much further back. So spring will come a bit early this year, calendar-wise.
The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EST, UT –5 hours). They may be different for your location.

March Evening Star Chart

The planets and stars are plotted for the 15th at 10 p.m. EDT in the evening and 6 a.m. for the morning chart. These are the chart times. Note that Traverse City is located approximately 45 minutes behind our time meridian. (An hour and 45 minutes behind our Daylight Saving Time meridian during EDT). To duplicate the star positions on a planisphere (rotating star finder) you may have to set it to 45 minutes or 1 hour 45 minutes earlier than your current time.
Note the chart times of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. are for the 15th. For each week before the 15th, add ½ hour (28 minutes if you’re picky). For each week after the 15th, subtract ½ hour. For planet positions on dates other than the 15th, check the Wednesday planet posts on this blog.

Ephemeris: 02/01/2024 – Preview of February days and nights
This is Ephemeris for Thursday, February 1st. Today the Sun will be up for 9 hours and 48 minutes, setting at 5:50, and it will rise tomorrow at 8:01. The Moon, 1 day before last quarter, will rise at 1:02 tomorrow morning.
Let’s preview the month of February. It will be a day longer this year because it’s a leap year, the adjustment to keep the calendar in sync with the seasons. The daylight hours throughout February will be getting longer. Daylight hours will increase from 9 hours and 48 minutes today to 11 hours and 8 minutes on the 29th. The altitude of the Sun at noon will increase from 28 degrees today to nearly 38 degrees at month’s end. The Straits area will see the Sun a degree lower. Local noon, by the way for Interlochen and Traverse City at mid-month is about 12:56 p.m, which is mainly due to the fact that our standard time meridian happens to run through Philadelphia and the Sun is currently running 13 minutes slow.
The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EST, UT –5 hours). They may be different for your location.

Ephemeris Extra: 01/01/2024 – Previewing January skies
This post didn’t make it into a radio program, so enjoy.
We start a new year and a month. The daylight hours start slowly getting longer and will accelerate during the month. Daylight hours in Interlochen and Traverse City will increase from 8 hours and 52 minutes on the 1st to 9 hours and 46 minutes on the 31st. The sunrise time will decrease from 8:20 am on the 1st to 8:03 am at month’s end. The sunset times will increase from 5:12 pm on the 1st to 5:49 pm on the 31st. Along with that the altitude of the sun at noon will increase from 22 degrees tomorrow to nearly 28 degrees at month’s end. It will be a degree lower for folks in the Straits area because they are a degree of latitude farther north. Local noon, by the way for Interlochen and Traverse City is around 12:51 p.m. in January.
The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EST, UT –5 hours). They may be different for your location.
January Evening Star Chart

The planets and stars are plotted for the 15th at 9 p.m. EST in the evening and 6 a.m. for the morning chart. These are the chart times. The brilliant planet Venus will enter the sky at the chart time during the latter half of the month in the southwest. Note that Traverse City is located approximately 45 minutes behind our time meridian, West 75° longitude. (An hour 45 minutes behind our daylight saving time meridian during EDT).
January Morning Star Chart

For a list of constellation names to go with the abbreviations click here.
- Pointer stars at the front of the bowl of the Big Dipper point to Polaris the North Star.
- The leaky bowl of the Big Dipper drips on Leo.
- Follow the arc of the handle of the Big Dipper to the star Arcturus, then
- Follow the spike to Spica.
- QuadR on the star charts is the radiant of the Quadrantid meteor shower which peaks on the 4th at 3:20 a.m. EST (8:20 UT).

Ephemeris: 10/31/2023 – Previewing November skies
This is Ephemeris for Halloween, Tuesday, October 31st. Today the Sun will be up for 10 hours and 13 minutes, setting at 6:33, and it will rise tomorrow at 8:20. The Moon, 3 days past full, will rise at 8:09 this evening.
Let’s take a look at November skies. The time change back to standard time will set us back an hour on sunrise and sunset times, so it’ll be brighter in the morning and darker in the evening starting Sunday, the 5th. Out east in New York City, the Sun is already setting before 5 p.m. It will never set that early here. The Sun will be up for 10 hours 11 minutes on the 1st, and that will dwindle down to 9 hours and 5 minutes at month’s end. The Sun reaches 30 ½ degrees above the southern horizon at local apparent solar noon on the 1st, which is around 12:25 p.m. this month. It will drop to 23 ½ degrees on the 30th. As the Earth orbits the Sun now, the North Pole of the Earth is tilting farther and farther away from the Sun providing us with less of its heat. The Leonid meteor shower, peaking on the 18th, is expected to be lackluster this year. We are about 9 or 10 years away from the time that the Leonids become spectacular again as they do every 33 or so years. Jupiter will reach opposition from the Sun on the 2nd, and Mars will be in conjunction with the Sun on the 17th.
The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT –4 hours). They may be different for your location.
