Ephemeris: 08/01/2023 – Looking ahead to August skies

August 1, 2023 Comments off

This is Ephemeris for Tuesday, August 1st. Today the Sun will be up for 14 hours and 39 minutes, setting at 9:08, and it will rise tomorrow at 6:29. The Moon, at full today, will rise at 9:44 this evening.

Let’s look ahead at the month of August in the skies. Daylight hours will decrease from 14 hours and 39 minutes today to 13 hours 17 minutes on the 31st. The altitude of the Sun at local noon, that is degrees of angle above the southern horizon, will decrease from 63 degrees today to just over 53 degrees on the 31st. Straits area listeners can subtract one more degree from those angles. Local noon, when the Sun is due south, is about 1:43 p.m. The Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak on the morning of the13th. The Moon will not interfere until it rises at 3:39 am, but then it’s only a waning crescent. A few Perseid meteors can be seen even now, nearly two weeks before the peak. They will seem to come from the northeastern part of the sky.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT –4 hours). They may be different for your location.

The planets and stars are plotted for the 15th at 10 pm EDT in the evening and 5 am. These are the chart times. Note that Traverse City is located approximately 45 minutes behind our time meridian, West 75° longitude. (An hour 45 minutes behind our daylight saving time meridian during EDT). To duplicate the star positions on a planisphere you may have to set it to 1 hour 45 minutes earlier than the current time.

Note the chart times are for the 15th. For each week before the 15th, add ½ hour (28 minutes if you’re picky). For each week after the 15th, subtract ½ hour. The planet positions are updated each Wednesday on this blog. See them for planet positions on dates other than the 15th.

06/30/2023 – Ephemeris – Previewing July’s skies

June 30, 2023 Comments off

This is Bob Moler with Ephemeris for International Asteroid Day, Friday, June 30th. Today the Sun will be up for 15 hours and 31 minutes, setting at 9:32, and it will rise tomorrow at 6:01. The Moon, 3 days before full, will set at 3:45 tomorrow morning.

Let’s preview July’s skies. The Sun, having reached its northern solstice, is beginning to slide southward again, at first imperceptibly, then with greater speed. The daylight hours will decrease from 15 hours and 31 minutes tomorrow to 14 hours 42 minutes at month’s end. The daylight hours will be slightly shorter south of Interlochen, and slightly longer to the north. The altitude of the Sun at local noon, when it is due south, will decrease from 68 degrees now to 63 degrees at month’s end. The Sun will be a degree lower in the Straits area. Despite the warmth, the Earth will reach its greatest distance from the Sun next Thursday, the 6th. On that day, the Earth will reach 94.5 million miles (152.1 million kilometers) from the Sun.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT –4 hours). They may be different for your location.

06/01/2023 – Ephemeris – Previewing June Skies

June 1, 2023 Comments off

This is Bob Moler with Ephemeris for Thursday, June 1st. Today the Sun will be up for 15 hours and 20 minutes, setting at 9:21, and it will rise tomorrow at 5:59. The Moon, 2 days before full, will set at 4:43 tomorrow morning.

Let’s begin this program’s 49th trip around the Sun by previewing the skies of June. There will be a lot of Sun in June and very little night. The daylight hours will increase a bit from 15 hours and 20 minutes today to 15 hours and 34 minutes on the 21st, retreating back to 15 hours 31 minutes at month’s end. At this time of the year the sunset times for Ludington, Interlochen, Petoskey and Mackinaw City are very nearly the same. However, the sunrise times are at their most divergent. With Ludington’s sunrise being 14 minutes later than Mackinaw City’s. The altitude of the Sun above the southern horizon at local noon around 1:43 p.m. will hover around 68 to 69 degrees. Summer will start on the 21st at 10:58 a.m. Venus will look great in our skies and in telescopes this month.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT –4 hours). They may be different for your location.

05/01/2023 – Ephemeris – Previewing May Skies

May 1, 2023 Comments off

This is Ephemeris for Monday, the first of May. Today the Sun will be up for 14 hours and 14 minutes, setting at 8:47, and it will rise tomorrow at 6:31. The Moon, halfway from first quarter to full, will set at 5:20 tomorrow morning.

Let’s look ahead at the month of May, the month when the promise of spring is finally fulfilled. Daylight hours in the Interlochen/Traverse City area will increase from 14 hours and 14 minutes today to 15 hours 19 minutes on the 31st. The altitude, or angle, of the Sun above the southern horizon at local noon will ascend from 60 degrees today to 67 degrees at month’s end. The altitude of the Sun in the Straits area will be a degree lower than that. Local apparent noon this month, when the Sun passes due south, will be about 1:38 p.m. Early this month we’ll have The Eta Aquariid meteor shower early in the morning, though it will be hindered by a bright Moon. Venus and Mars are our evening planets. Venus will continue to approach Mars all month.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EST, UT –4 hours). They may be different for your location.

The planets and stars are plotted for the 15th at 11 p.m. EDT in the evening and 4 a.m. for the morning chart.
Note, the chart times of 11 p.m. and 4 a.m. are for the 15th. For each week before the 15th, add ½ hour (28 minutes if you’re picky). For each week after the 15th, subtract ½ hour or 28 minutes. The planet positions are updated each Wednesday on this blog. For planet positions on dates other than the 15th, check the Wednesday planet posts on this blog for weekly positions.

01/31/2023 – Ephemeris – Previewing February skies

January 31, 2023 Comments off

This is Ephemeris for Tuesday, January 31st. Today the Sun will be up for 9 hours and 46 minutes, setting at 5:49, and it will rise tomorrow at 8:02. The Moon, 3 days past first quarter, will set at 5:36 tomorrow morning.

February is the shortest month, even so, the daylight hours throughout the month will be getting longer. Daylight hours will expand from 9 hours and 49 minutes tomorrow the first, to 11 hours and 6 minutes on the 28th. The sunrise time will drop from 8:02 tomorrow to 7:22 at month’s end. The sunset times will extend from 5:51 tomorrow to 6:28 on the 28th. Along with that, the altitude of the Sun at local noon will increase from 28 degrees tomorrow to nearly 38 degrees at month’s end. Local noon, by the way, for Interlochen and Traverse City, when the Sun is due south, will be 12:57 p.m. at mid-month. Venus and Jupiter will appear to approach each other all month, in the western evening sky, coming into conjunction March 1st.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EST, UT –5 hours). They may be different for your location.

The planets and stars are plotted for the 15th at 9 p.m. EST in the evening and 6 a.m. for the morning chart. These are the chart times. Note that Traverse City is located approximately 45 minutes behind our time meridian. (An hour 45 minutes behind our daylight saving time meridian during EDT). To duplicate the star positions on a planisphere (rotating star finder) you may have to set it to 1 hour 45 minutes earlier than the current time.

Note the chart times of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. are for the 15th. For each week before the 15th, add ½ hour (28 minutes if you’re picky). For each week after the 15th, subtract ½ hour. The planet positions are updated each Wednesday on this blog. For planet positions on dates other than the 15th, check the Wednesday planet posts on this blog.

01/03/2023 – Ephemeris – A belated preview of January skies

January 3, 2023 Comments off

This is Ephemeris for Tuesday, January 3rd. The Sun will rise at 8:20. It’ll be up for 8 hours and 54 minutes, setting at 5:14. The Moon, 3 days before full, will set at 6:41 tomorrow morning.

I’m starting the January preview a bit late. We’re a day past the latest sunrise at about the same time as today, 8:20 a.m. and will back down to 8:03 by the 31st. Sunset times are currently increasing by a minute a day, from 5:14 p.m. today to 5:49 at month’s end. Listeners will have about the same sunrise time in Ludington, Interlochen/Traverse City, Petoskey and Mackinaw City, but the sunset times will vary markedly with the sunset times earlier in the north and later in the south. The Quadrantid meteor shower will reach peak this evening. It will have competition all night from the bright Moon. Tomorrow, the Earth will be its closest to the Sun for the entire year. This afternoon the Moon skated past Mars, so tonight the Red Planet will appear above and right of the Moon.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EST, UT –5 hours). They may be different for your location.

12/01/2022 – Ephemeris – Let’s preview December skies

December 1, 2022 Comments off

This is Ephemeris for Thursday, December 1st. Today the Sun will be up for 9 hours and 3 minutes, setting at 5:03, and it will rise tomorrow at 8:01. The Moon, 1 day past first quarter, will set at 1:57 tomorrow morning.

Let’s preview December’s skies. Winter will officially arrive on the 21st at 4:48 p.m., the winter solstice. The noontime Sun will dip from 23 ½ degrees to a bit less than 22 degrees above the southern horizon on that day. There will be little movement in the sunset times: In the Traverse City/Interlochen area this will be from 5:03 today, down to 5:02 and then advancing to 5:11 at the end of the month. The sunrise times will advance from 7:59 today to 8:20 on the 31st. The Moon will pass in front of Mars on the 7th, the night of the full moon and Mars opposition. The Geminid meteor shower whose maximum is on the morning of the 14th will have interference from the last quarter Moon.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EST, UT –5 hours). They may be different for your location.

11/01/2022 – Ephemeris – Previewing November skies

November 1, 2022 Comments off

This is Bob Moler with Ephemeris for Tuesday, November 1st. The Sun will rise at 8:20. It’ll be up for 10 hours and 10 minutes, setting at 6:31. The Moon, at first quarter today, will set at 1:21 tomorrow morning.

Let’s look ahead at the skies for the month of November. The Sun is still moving south rapidly. Daylight hours in the Interlochen/Traverse City area and will drop from 10 hours and 10 minutes today to 9 hours 5 minutes on the 30th. The altitude, or angle, of the Sun above the southern horizon at local noon will be at 30 degrees today and will descend to 23 and a half degrees on the 30th. The altitude of the Sun in the Straits area will be a degree lower. Local noon, this month, will be about 12:30 p.m. once we’re on standard time beginning on the 6th. There will be a total eclipse of the Moon on the morning of the 8th, Election Day. The eclipse will start shortly after 4 am and be visible until it sets during the last stages of the eclipse just after sunrise, around 7:40 am. I’ll have more information on it next Monday.

The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EDT, UT – 4 hours). They may be different for your location.
