Ephemeris: 02/17/2025 – Follow the Drinking Gourd
This is Ephemeris for President’s Day, Monday, February 17th. Today the Sun will be up for 10 hours and 35 minutes, setting at 6:14, and it will rise tomorrow at 7:38. The Moon, 3 days before last quarter, will rise at 11:47 this evening.
In the decades before the Civil War, runaway slaves would travel, often at night, northward from the slave states in the south to the northern free states and Canada over the metaphorical Underground Railroad following the Drinking Gourd, the Big Dipper as their compass. For millennia, the North Pole of the sky had been passing near the handle of the Big Dipper or Great Bear’s tail and now up to the star Polaris in the Little Dipper. As an amateur astronomer, who loves the dark, starlit skies, I’ve noticed that everyone is the same color in the dark! This year the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society will, once again, team with the Sleeping Bear Dunes for more Sun and star parties.
The astronomical event times given are for the Traverse City/Interlochen area of Michigan (EST, UT – 5 hours). Times will be different for other locations.

06/19/2023 – Ephemeris – Juneteenth and the flight to freedom
This is Bob Moler with Ephemeris for Juneteenth, Monday, June 19th. Today the Sun will be up for 15 hours and 34 minutes, setting at 9:31, and it will rise tomorrow at 5:56. The Moon, 1 day past new, will set at 11:22 this evening.
In 1865, it was on June 19th that the Union soldiers, led by Major General Gordon Granger, landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the slaves were now free. Until then about the only path to freedom for the slaves was “To follow the Drinking Gourd”, or the Big Dipper, northward. The Big Dipper and the Great Bear, Ursa Major, has, for the last few millennia been the constellation of the north, being closer to the North Pole of the sky than it is now. The Earth’s axis has a slow wobble, called precession, caused by the gravitational pull of the Moon and Sun on Earth’s slight equatorial bulge of 30 miles wider than the pole to pole distance. That wobble period is nearly 26 thousand years.

01/21/2013 – Ephemeris – MLK Day, Jupiter above the Moon tonight
Ephemeris for Martin Luther King Day and Inauguration Day, Monday, January 21st. The sun will rise at 8:11. It’ll be up for 9 hours and 24 minutes, setting at 5:36. The moon, 3 days past first quarter, will set at 4:33 tomorrow morning.
Today is the holiday commemorating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and his struggle for civil rights. Today we will have the second inauguration of the first African American President. Another chapter in the struggle for the equality of all people. Back before the Civil War, runaway slaves used the stars to steer their flight northward. The prominent pattern of northern stars that aided their journey was the Drinking Gourd. We know it as the Big Dipper. which is starting to rise higher in the northeast. Also in the sky tonight the planet Jupiter will appear above the moon, their closest approach will be at 10:30 p.m. For us closest approach will be at 2 moon diameters. A couple of thousand miles south of here the moon will cover the planet.
